Micro Focus Completes Acquisition of Relativity Technologies

Micro Focus International announced that it has completed the acquisition of Relativity Technologies. Completion of the transaction follows a meeting of Relativity Technologies shareholders held on 30 December 2008 at which its shareholders accepted the offer. As previously announced by Micro Focus, it is intended that the Relativity Technologies business will now be fully integrated into the Micro Focus Group. On December 8, 2008, Micro Focus announced their agreed offer to acquire Relativity Technologies for approximately US $9.7 million in cash.

Chinese Government Issues 3G Licenses, Mobile Shares Soar

Shares in Chinese mobile companies soared this week after China approved the issuance of licenses for next generation (3G) mobile networks. China’s state council approved the issuance of the long-awaited licensees, opening the door to some $41 billion in spending for equipment. Competition to win 3G subscribers will be fierce, said analysts, meaning the only sure winners from the 3G license issuing will be 3G equipment manufacturers. The council did not say when the licenses would be issued by the Ministry of Industry of Information, but the industry minister has said it would happen by early 2009.

Wikipedia Reaches Fundraising Target

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia announced that it had attained its fundraising goal of six million dollars, enough to cover operating expenses for the current fiscal year. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said more than 125,000 people had donated a total of four million dollars since he made an appeal for funds on July 1. “In addition, we’ve received major gifts and foundation support totaling two million dollars,” Wales said in a thank you letter on the website of his non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. “This combined revenue will cover our operating expenses for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, 2009.”
