Following 5 years of research and development, Cfengine AS has released an upgrade of the Open Source, self-repairing software cfengine based on its Promise Theory technology. Cfengine is a self-repairing maintenance engine capable of fixing errors and misalignments in the Data Center without human intervention. Systems are compliant and maintained even when humans are unavailable, because they have made all the decisions in advance.

JumpBox Releases 38 Open Source Virtual Appliances for Amazon Cloud Service

JumpBox has announced the release of 38 Open Source applications to the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service. The release enables server application deployment, configuration, and management almost completely independent of any user hardware. JumpBox offers small to mid-sized organizations a library of Open Source applications packaged as pre-built, pre-configured virtual appliances through JumpBox Open, its annual subscription service. Wikipedia Reaches Fundraising Target

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia announced that it had attained its fundraising goal of six million dollars, enough to cover operating expenses for the current fiscal year. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said more than 125,000 people had donated a total of four million dollars since he made an appeal for funds on July 1. "In addition, we've received major gifts and foundation support totaling two million dollars," Wales said in a thank you letter on the website of his non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. "This combined revenue will cover our operating expenses for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, 2009."

Much like “Web 2.0″, cloud computing was a collection of related concepts that people recognized, but didn’t really have a good descriptor for, a definition in search of a term, you could say. When Google CEO Eric Schmidt used it in 2006 to describe their own stuff and then Amazon included the word “cloud” in EC2 when it was launched a few weeks later (August 24), the term became mainstream.
